Sex Pistols解散後、マルコム・マクラーレンが見つけた次の飯の種。
ごくフツウのニューウェイブバンドだったのに、彼に目をつけられた途端、いきなり変なお化粧と海賊ルックスでテレビ出まくり。
目立った分だけ売れはしましたが、日本のビジュアル系同様、飽きられるのも早かった。
その後ソロ名義にして目先を少々変えてみたものの、ダメなものはダメ。

でも、ラップを'81年の段階でポップスのフィールドで試してみたり、今聴いても音としては結構おもしろかったりします。

Adamski (→Adamski's Thing) (1988-)

本名Adam Tinley。アシッドハウスブームを808 Stateと共に引っ張った親方的存在。
確かその頃始まったレイヴカルチャー出身で初めてメジャーと契約したアーティストと記憶。

ソロ前はパンク系バンド The Stupid Babiesを組んでいて、インディーズチャート３位取ったり、
ジョン・ピールのラジオセッションに出演したり、それでもまあまあの位置に陣取っていたのですが、
他にもヒップホップ系サイドユニットを組んだりしつつ、リズム方面にも多少突っ込んでいました。
その後、シカゴ・ハウスDJのJimi Poloと出会い、完全に方針転換。
それでシーケンサーの使い方を覚えながらレイヴに出演し始め、そこで一躍時の人になったと。

ファーストアルバムLiveandirectは、結局レイヴ用に仕込んだデータをそのまま音源化しただけという
比較的アンチコマーシャルなやりかたでもってデビューしましたが、きちんと曲作りから仕込んだシングル
「Killer」が狂ったようなヒットとなり、アルバム「Doctor Adamski's Musical Pharmacy」も売れ、シンガーのSealともどもスターダムへ。
ただし、Sealはその歌のうまさとセルフプロデュースの巧みさでその後その座をきっちりとキープし続けたのに比べると、
時代の流れと共に陳腐化してしまうのがサウンドメイクの方をしていた人の常。
実際、当時の音は今聴いたら笑っちゃうくらいスッカスカの音ですし、やっぱり時代って恐ろしい。

結局次のアルバム"Naughty"の時点で既にだいぶ盛り下がり、その後ふっつりと表舞台から姿を消し、
シコシコとDJ仕事で食いつなぐようになってしまいます。

'98年にはSealつながりか、ZTTから名義を変えて再び音源をリリースしますが、
やはりどうも時代についていけていない音が出てくるばかりでいかんともしがたい状態。
ていうか、ジャケットが実に疲れた感じでそれだけで心配になってしまうような。
結局その後はシングル１枚出したきりでまた表舞台からフェイドアウト。

結局現在は、名義を「Adam Sky」と変更し、細々とDJ仕事中。

シューゲイザーの残り滓。
バンドをスタートさせたのは、他の似た傾向のバンド連中から半歩ほど遅れただけなのですが、
「オレたちはあんなヤツらと違う」とか言いつつ、他と差別化を図りながらもモタモタとシングルを作ってるうちに、
連中がみんないなくなっていました。
かといって、そんなぽっかり空いた空き家の仕切りをバリバリこなすほど肝の据わった奴等がこの手の音をやるわきゃありません。

ブリティッシュ・インベンションと呼ばれる、英バンドがこぞって米に上陸した'82〜'83年頃に
"Der Kommissar"がちょこっとだけ受けたバンド。なぜ受けたのかはさっぱりわかりません。
ELOの前座でヨーロッパを回ったりもしたんですが、音的にもまさに「実力不足のELO」という感じ。
煮詰まり切らないメロディと詰め切れていないアレンジが、妙に聴き手をイライラさせてくれます。

ルックスはびっくりするくらい垢抜けていません。MTV経由で売れた他の英国産バンドとは悪い意味で一線を画していました。

80年代半ば、爆破音中心の無茶苦茶にアッパーなサンプリングノイズを駆使して、アドレナリン垂れ流しまくって
いた人たち。プリンスの「Kiss」のノイズまみれのカヴァーは一時日本でもよく流れておりました。
政治的にも随分勇ましい発言を繰り返し、一時はPublic Enemyともコラボレーションしたり。
が、何故かバンドとしては順風満帆な時期に「ボーン・トゥ・煽り」な声の持ち主、ヴォーカルのSteveが突如脱退。
んで、新たに黒人ヴォーカルを入れて録音された2ndフルアルバムでこれまでのファン、みんなびっくり。
ソフィスティケイテッドされた洒落たダンスビートにソウルフルなヴォーカルが絡んでいました。

いやあ、どっかで去勢されたんでしょうか。一生テンション上げ続けるのに不安を感じてちょっと大人になったんでしょうか。
まあ、どっちにしろその時点で見事に「不要」の烙印を押されまして、アルバム発表の翌年にはきれいに解散しております。

いかにもアイリッシュな熱めの社会派ギターバンド。
とはいえ、他のその手のバンドが非常に生真面目な空気だったのと比較すると、どっかにKingmakerとかみたいな
ユーモア感覚があったのが差別化ポイント。

この手のバンドは、ライブ一生懸命やって受けてデビューして１枚目か２枚目のアルバムまでは行けるんですが、
だいたいがそこらへんで音楽的に行き詰ってしまうのが常でして。
彼らも２枚目でメジャーから放り出され、そっから先は良心的なレーベルとして名高いSetantaに拾われて
さらに３枚頑張ってみましたが、結局行く末は見出せず、'98年辺りから目立った活動がなくなってしまい、
いつの間にやらいなくなってしまいました。

しかしこういうバンド名は非常に検索がしにくくて大変です。

Shampooあたりが一発当ててるときに、二番煎じっぽく出てきた姉妹。
Dave Stewartプロデュースでハクをつけてみましたが、アイドルにそんなハク必要なし。
最初こそは適度に売れましたが、直後にSpice Girlsにアイドル票を総取りされてあえなく撃沈。
したと思ったら、Spice Girlsが自滅しかかった頃にそーっと戻ってきました。
が、復活後の受けは全く芳しくなく、そのままMercuryをクビにされたあたりでコンビ解消。

あんまり可愛くない代わりにきちんと曲を書けた人たちだったので、
何となく売り方間違えたような気もいたします。

いかにもアイルランドのバンドらしくスケールのでかい音。んでもって少々下世話はいったメロディ。でもしっかりベースには「ゴス」。
Wayne Husseyが参加してる曲もあるし。ゴス色はかなりうすまってはいるんで、
ニューミュージックの根っこにある「フォーク的な暗さ」に近いような気も。
時々日本のニューミュージックを聴いているような錯覚に陥るのはそのせいかもしれません。

解散後、VoのReganは、BassのCousinとDrumのPriceと共に1995年、Miceを結成。
All About Eveに比べて、かなり聴きやすいストレートなギターポップになっています。

この時期にドイツから出てきた割には、所謂ジャーマンテクノのいいところも悪いところもない、実に普通のエレポップ。
ただその普通さは、ジャーマンテクノの親玉格、Klaus Schulzeをプロデューサーに迎えてもほとんど揺るがない鉄壁の普通さ。
それを20年に渡り頑なに守り続けているのはある意味賞賛に値します。
まあ、だからこそデビュー時こそヒットしたものの、変わらないまま人気も下降線をたどっちゃったわけですが。

メジャーとの契約を切られてからも揺るぐことなく活動を続け、ソロで出してみたり、長い活動期間にものを言わせて
８枚組ボックスセットとか、３年後にはまた別の４枚組ボックスセットとか、ふざけたアイテムを繰り出したりと、
実にマイペースで活動継続中です。

そもそもはグラスゴーでひっそりと暮らし，Siouxsie ＆ The Bansheesの前座なんかしていたのに，
John Peelに目をつけられたからさあ大変。

Clare Grogan
しばらくテレビの仕事をした後，87年にソロで再デビュー。シングルを発表するものの見事に外して再びドロップアウト。
'96年には，Rosa Motaというバンドに加入し，Mute傘下のレーベルからアルバム"Bionic"を発表するも，その直後バンド解散。
テレビ女優などをしていたようですが、'00年にThe 6th'sのアルバム"Hyacinths and Thistles"で、
ゲストヴォーカルとして久々にＣＤにクレジットが入りました。
ちなみにメンバーStephen Lironiと結婚しております。

レゲエ好きだから、と何となく始めたバンドが、女子ばっかりなのにそこそこうまい、ということでうっかり注目されてデビューしちゃった女子たち。
ただしその後グズグズにならずに、ライブを積み重ねてバリバリのやり手に成長していったところが、他の凡百のバンドと一線を画しています。

しかし、メジャー契約した直後あたりから、ニューウェイブ、ツートーン流れで盛り上がっていたレゲエシーンが一段落したことを受けて、
アイランド・レーベルも、ただのレゲエでは許さないとばかりにポップス的な音を出すことを強要します。
で、ここでグズグズにならずに、Ａ面用に超ポップな曲を作り、B面ではゴリゴリのオールド･スクールなレゲエをかまし、
そしてシングルとしてはきっちりヒットさせてしまうというあたりが、これもまた凡百のバンドと一線を画していたわけで。

それでもだいぶ無理はしていたわけで。
内部で揉めてメンバーの半分が去り、やっとのことで出したアルバムもプロモーションをほとんどしてもらえず、アイランドを飛び出て
EMIと契約するものの、やっぱりポップス的な音を求められて、ストック・エイトキン・ウォーターマンのリミックスとかまで出ちゃう始末。
残った３人の結束は固かったものの、もうこれ以上やっていられなくなった模様。

解散という形を取ったものの、その直後に Amazulu IIなんて名義でまた始めたのは、きっと契約解除したいだけだったのではないかと。
なんか非常に80年代的に悲惨な流れではありますが。

Goodbye Mr. Mackenzieの主要メンバーがMCAレーベルと大喧嘩して解雇された結果、新たに結成したバンド。
Mackenziesではフロントに立っていたMartin Metcalfeがギタリストとしてバックに引っ込み、
キーボードだったShirley Mansonをフロントに引っ張り上げてスタイルの一新を図りました。
とはいえ、契約のいざこざで別の名前で活動しなければいけなかったという状況だったわけで、
Mackenziesの匂いがそれで消えるわけもなく、ニューウェイブ臭をぷんぷんさせつつも大味な音を相変わらずだだ流し。

そもそもShirley、Martin MetcalfeのガールフレンドとしてMackenzieに参加、でも別れた後ものし上がるための野心を胸に
バンドに居残り続けたという経緯を持つ女。こんなヘタレバンドのフロントになったくらいでは収まりがつかず、
アメリカのおっさん３人から打診された途端にバンドをおっぽり出して渡米。Garbage結成に参加しちゃったわけでございまして。

放置されたメンバーはとても惨めです。

元RideのMark Gardenerが、Rideの同僚Laurence Colbertや、Supaergrassのプロデュースをやりつつ
The Mysticsで活動していたSam Williamsらを連れ込んで作ったバンド。

Andy Bellが凄い勢いでHurricane#1を結成して凄い勢いで解散させていたのを横目に見つつ、
３年かけてじっくりと準備を行い、満を持してデビューしたわけでございます。
音は、オーソドックスなギターサウンドをベースにしつつ、アナログシンセやサンプリングも導入したスタイル。
つまり、図ったのかそうでないのか、当時の英国バンドの流行り、しかもこの時点で高性能なバンドが
良作をボコボコと出していた時期に、よりによってそのど真ん中に突っ込んじゃったわけですね。

決して悪くはないんですが、このバンドならでは！の部分はどうもよくわからん、という状態でして。
つうか、あっためすぎて出てくるタイミングを完全に間違えた感ありあり。
結局、言い出しっぺのMark Gardenerが脱退する形で、Hurricane#1以上に凄い勢いで解散しました。

しばらくは地元OxfordのクラブでDJをしたりしてお茶を濁していたようですが、
03年３月にアメリカで小規模なソロ・アコースティックツアーを行い、活動を本格的に再開。
'03年10月にライブアルバムを発表し、来日公演も行っております。

Animalhouse存命時からサイドプロジェクトとして参加していたBob Dylanのトリビュートバンド
Zimmermanの活動に専念している模様。

小粋なジャズ・ファンク。黒人さんが混じっているぶんだけ本格派ではありましたが，でも結局は聞き流すと心地いい音止まり。
レーベルと喧嘩していろいろ大変だったようですし，へたにメジャーと契約せず，
小さなクラブでずっとやってた方が本当はよかったのかもしれません。
でも，Billy Chapmanだけは，スタイル・カウンシルにも参加して吹いておりましたので，ちょっといい思いしてましたか。

R.E.M.にも通じるようなシンプルな音、でもトランペットがメンバーにいる分ネオアコ的な響きもあったり。
時折弦も入ったり、実に聴いていて気持ちのいい音です。

でもそれは普通に音さえ聴いていれば、の話であり、歌詞がもう完璧イギリス人というか、徹頭徹尾ヒネた嫌な奴。
たとえばメロディメイカーでシングル・オブ・ザ・ウイークを取った彼らの出世作（というか唯一のちょろヒット曲）の"Pink Carnation"。
きれいなタイトルですが、単に看護婦さんが間違えてぶちまけた輸血の血液をたとえているだけだったり。
"Madame Yevonde"は単にケバい格好のおばちゃんを馬鹿にしてるだけの歌だったり。

地味ながら曲もよく書けていますし、アレンジの幅も広い。実に達者なバンドだったのですが、
唯一、その歌詞のせいで盛り上がりきらなかった模様。ていうか、ベスト盤出るようなバンドだとは思わなかったぞ。

Ｍ字ハゲがフロントマンの４人組。
Stiffからのデビューというのがずっぱまりの、ニック・ロウ→コステロ流れバリバリの音でございます。
というか、並べて評せるくらいのソングライティングをしているわけですから、実はすごいんですが。

ただ、満を持して出て行ったはずのメジャーレーベルで、当時ありがちな「売れ線」的音楽的介入を受けてしまい、
絶妙に元々の味とは違う方向に行ってしまいました。結局Stiffのとき以上に売れずにそのまま解散。

結局、Ｍ字ハゲClive Gregsonは、解散後フォーク畑で才能を開花させることになるわけで、
EMIもきちんと思い通りの音楽をやらせておけば少なくとも損はしなかったと思うのですが。
ルックスで売ることは不可能なバンドだったわけですし。

で、どうやら2005年になって再結成した模様です。ニューアルバムの作成中という話。
元々出していたのが時代云々で廃れる音ではないので、期待しておきましょうよ。

Clive Gregson
85年からソロ活動を開始。また、それと平行してChristine Collisterとのデュオでフォークソング的な音に。
その界隈では非常に大きな評価を得ます。
デュオを92年に解散させた後は、Boo Hewerdine、Eddi Readerとのトリオでの活動や、
Ian Matthewsらとのユニット"Plainsong"等に参加したり、積極的な活動を続けています。

「エレポップ，4ADへ行く」という風情のストイックな音世界を作って，業界受けはけっこうよかったのですが，
結局はあんまり売れず，遊びでColorboxのメンツとやったM/A/A/R/Sが全英１位というかなり皮肉な結果。

The Boo Radleysのクリエイション前のデビューミニアルバムのプロデュースも手がけていたようですが，
さっさと売れられてしまいましたし，なんだかついてねえ。結局は，インディどさ回りをしたあげくにフェイドアウトいたしました。

テイラー兄弟のThe Power Stationに対抗する形で立ち上げた，DURAN DURAN３人の別ユニット。
パワステがこってこてのロック風だったのに対し，若干デカダンヨーロッパ風味の音作り。
なんとなく，当時のデュランデュランの音のしくみがわかったような気がして意味もなくうれしかったりしましたが。
まあ，そんな音ですので，アメリカではパワーステーションほど受けませんでした。

サイモン，ニックはDURAN DURANがんばり中。ロジャーは結局その後一旦ショービズ界からドロップアウト。
しかし'01年、DURAN DURANのオリジナルメンバー再結集という反則技で復活いたしました。

解散したThe SkidsのRichard Jobsonが、他のバンドを脱退して暇そうにしていたそこらへんの多少名の売れた
人材と共に結成した、スーパーバンドというには若干各々のキャラが弱い、結果として単なる寄せ集めバンド。

The Skidsで同僚だったStuwart Adamsonが Big Countryで調子のいい再スタートを切ったのを見てしまったためか、
何とか売れようという気まんまんの、ダイナミックなバンドサウンドを志向していたようですが、
元々がニューウェイブな文系気質の人たちばかりですので、線の細いメロディーをシンセやコーラスで派手に見せかけようとするなど、
そこかしこに無理が生じておりまして、ダイナミックにやろうとして結局ただの大味になっちゃったというか、
なんか豪華な書き割りみたいな音になっちゃってました。

やっぱ無理するのは自分らでもしんどかったのか、１枚アルバム出してしばらく休んで、
そしたら２人脱退して、２人で頑張ってもうちょっと録音しようとして、もう１枚アルバム
こさえる前に嫌になっちゃったみたいです。
結局そのときの音源は、Richard Jobsonのソロ名義で発表されています。

で、アルバムのクレジットにある名義の「The Legend」とか「The Captain」ていうのは一体何だったんでしょうか。
いい歳こいてちょっと恥ずかしいと思います。

The Armoury Show以前にもソロ名義でポエトリー・リーディングのアルバムをクレプスキュールから出していたのですが、
再びそっちの活動を再開。'87年にアルバム "16 Years of Alcohol"を発表しています。

John McGeoch
このバンドの時点で相当数のバンドを渡り歩いてきた彼。この後も、Public Image Limited,
Siouxsie & The Bansheesのメンバーとして渡り歩き続けました。

Russell Webb
PCゲーム開発の仕事に転身したということです。

John Doyle
Magazine人脈の流れで、Barry Adamsonの'89年のアルバム"Moss Side Story"に参加していました。

アラン・マッギーが惚れ込んで金を積んだとか，レコーディング用にもらった金を全部イビザで遊んで使い果たしたとか，
それでデモテープをそのまま渡したらそれがCDになったとか，音が出る前に「伝説」ばかりが先走り。
んでもってなんだかすごい期待をして，いざ聴いてみたらたいしたことなかったよーん。
そこらへん，口コミマーケティングのノウハウは，日本の代理店でもうちょっと勉強した方がよかったね。

その後、Creation消滅とともに行方不明になっていましたが、結局引き続きアラン・マッギーに面倒見てもらうことに決定。
'01年にPoptonesからニューアルバムを発表しています。

サンプリングという「武器」を初めて表舞台に引っ張り出し、その後のすべての電子音楽の基礎になったのに。
デビューミニアルバムはいまだにフロアで重宝され、芝居やテレビ番組のBGMとしてもバンバン使われているのに。

なんかバンドの名前はどんどん影が薄くなっているような気がするんです。
クラフトワーク並みにリスペクトされてもいいはずなのに。
中途半端に生き残りを図り、中途半端な音を出しすぎたからでしょうか。

で、ZTTなので、微妙なミックス違いのシングルとか再発盤内容違いが大量に世の中に出回っています。

エグイくらいのエモーショナル根性ヴォーカルに，繊細なエレポップサウンドが絡むという，
真似しようにもできない独特すぎる世界を打ち立てたグループ。

デビューから数年はそれこそ狂ったような，それでも一定のクオリティ以上のシングルリリースを続けるという荒行を行っていましたが，
Alan Rankineが脱退した途端に完全にバランスを崩しまして，録音はするもののお蔵入りを繰り返すわ，いきなり３年間沈黙するわ。
結局，後期はBilly MacKenzieのソロ・プロジェクトだったものの，最終的には名前を捨てざるを得なくなってしまいました。

'80年代後半のグループ休止時から，YelloやBEFにヴォーカリストとしてちょくちょくゲスト参加したり，
'92年にソロ名義でのアルバム "Outernational"を発表したりしていました。
'96年，Nudeレーベルに移籍しましたが，翌年，自ら命を絶ちました。享年39歳。

Dead Or AliveとBananaramaで大儲けしたジャンクダンスポップ製造軍団 Stock/Aitken/Watermanが、
てめえらのレーベルPWLを立ち上げて最初に売り出したのが彼。
とっちゃん坊やみたいな顔してモロ親父な声、という妙なギャップも妙に話題となり、一躍英米で大ヒット。
その後、「あんなダンスポップなんてやりたくなかったんだよん」とダダをこね、Stock/Aitken/Watermanをソデにして独立を図るも、
既にその頃にはアイドルとしての賞味期限ギリギリ。シングルを出すたびにチャートアクションが悪くなり、'93年にはドロップアウト。

その後は雑誌の「あの人は今」みたいな記事に出ては、「もう音楽の世界に戻るつもりはないよん」というようなことを言ってたみたいですが、
別の仕事はうまく行かなかったのか、ついに'01年、ドイツのレーベルと契約を結んでカムバック。
なんだかダチョウ倶楽部のリーダーを彷彿とさせる顔つきで。

21世紀に入ってからは、北欧の映画音楽のプロデュースなど、地味ながらも活動の幅を広げている模様。

日本中にスウェディッシュポップスの「かわいい」嵐が吹き荒れる中，彼の国から現れた孤立無援の
豪快野郎たち。

基礎体力は幾多のスウェディッシュバンドの100倍くらいはありそうでしたが，「スウェーデンの仲間」ではなく，
「いつの世にも現れる60年代チックなバンド」のひとつとして捉えられちゃったもんで，
ほとんどのリスナーは，ブランクの隙に次のそういうバンドに乗り換えてしまいました。

ただ本国ではほとんど伝説のバンドと化しておりまして、Niclas Friskはその後もいろいろと活動。
カーディガンズのニーナのソロプロジェクト"A Camp"にパートナーとして全面参加したり、
元スマパンのIhaと"Vanessa And The O's"というバンドを結成したり。
そして06年になって再結成。ニューアルバムを発表しています。

元Popsicleのメンバーと新バンド Sweet Chariots を結成。
'00年に1stアルバム"Beat Based/Songcentered/Spirit Led"を発表しています。
また、'01年にはThe CardigansのNinaのソロ・プロジェクト A Campに全面参加。

ネオアコの代名詞みたいになっていますが、そもそもネオアコ的なムーブメントは、当時のスコットランドの全体的な流れでして、
というか、スコットランドは当時から今に至るまでギターポップな感じでずっと来ているわけでして。

ヴィック・ゴダードが獣道を作り、エドウィン・コリンズが整備した道があって、
その道の存在を主に日本に知らしめた宣伝係、という位置付けが一番しっくり来るのではないかと。
もちろん、音のポップさとか、メロのよさとかは特筆すべきものがあるわけですし、
ファンカラティーナとか細かいところまで言及するといろいろとあるわけですけど、
それ含めても、日本では「ティーンエイジャーですわよ！」とか「イケメンですわよ！」
みたいなところが妙に誇張されていたような気がするわけでして。

結局その流れで、日本ではファーストアルバムばかりが「ネオアコ！」みたいな感じで評価されまくり、
実は音楽として一番脂が乗り、UKでもっとも売れていた3rdから4thアルバムの頃には、
日本国内では既に「終わった」感が漂っていたりして。

"Somewhere In My Heart"とか"Crying Scene"とか"Good Morning Britain"とかめちゃめちゃかっこいいですから、
ネオアコ特集とかで知った皆さんは、せめて４枚目まではきちんと聴いてください。お願いマジで。

で、ずーっとロディのソロ･プロジェクトとして存在していたわけですが、いつの間にか
名義を捨てて、ロディ・フレイムとして活動するようになった理由はいまいちわからんです。
