AFTER THE BAND?
Katieは元Sugarcubesのロリコン大魔王アイナーに捕まり、Frostbiteというユニットを結成しましたが、アイナーともどもその後行方不明に。
他のメンバーは迷走した挙げ句に、日本のマルチ芸者（?）花代と組み、97年2月にVAPID DOLLY (ヴァピッドリー)という名前でシングル
"the queen of pseudo echos"('97/dohb discs) を出しています。

さらにその後、某BBSの英国在住者のカキコミによると、
＞ケイティ以外のメンバーが、Dizzy Q Viper ってバンド名でライブしてた
＞のは昨年(97年)の夏見ましたよ。クリスピンがボーカルとってました。
＞みんな細身で長身だから華があってかっこよかった。
ということなのですが、これがパーマネントな活動なのか、詳細は不明です。

で，'99年に入って，結局花代をVoに据えたまま"Daisy Chainsaw"の名称を復活させたという情報も。
と思ったら，KatieとChrispinがよりを戻し，新バンド Queen Adreena を'99年内に結成しています。
ああ，もう落ち着いてくれ。

ほとんど思いつきとしか思えない、今考えても異様な組み合わせのコラボレーション。

Murphyの変態ヴォーカルと、Karnの変態ベースが絡み合う様は、ある意味おもしろいんですが、ある意味気持ち悪いです。
なんか観念的な、でもどっか座りの悪い音を残してとっととコンビ解消しました。 うん、正解。

あんまりヘコんでるイメージはなかったんですが、実は。

Jansen/Barbieriにゲスト参加してみたり、Rain Tree Crowをやってみたり、固定のユニットをあまりこさえずに
マイペースで活動中。'01年には日本のプロデューサー佐久間正英や土屋昌巳、屋敷豪太らと The d.e.p.という
バンドを組んで、いつもながらのベース音をぶよぶよと奏でていました。

デビュー後２枚のシングルは、その引出しの豊富さをあえて馬鹿っぽくブレンドした曲と馬鹿ジャケで、
他のブリットポップ勢とは一線を画した音を作っていたのですが、所属レーベルが大手傘下に入った途端に、
実に真っ当な、個性もへったくれもない凡なポップソングばかりを垂れ流し。
ライブの評判もかなりよかったのですが、CDがここまでダメになっちゃったらどうしようもありませんがな。

Spacemen 3の中心人物であったソニック･ブームとジェイソン・ピアーズが喧嘩してるのを見ていて
いやになっちゃっていたベーシストのPeteが、Spacemen 3の解散後に同胞Roscoを連れて作った新バンド。
つっても結局彼らもサイケデリア馬鹿の一味なわけで、出てくる音はやっぱりギターサイケ。
デビューアルバムの一曲目から６分以上あるギターインストをぶちかまし、イっちゃってるっぷりを発揮しまくっておりました。
ただ、Spacemen 3はとにかく音が強烈でしたので、聴いてて凄い部分があるわけですが、
彼らの音は多分、キメてないと何のことだかさっぱりわからんであろうゆるーい音。
健全な方には受け入れられることなく、どんどんマイナーになりながら３年ほど活動してしれっと解散。

そもそもがどポップなイメージで売りに出たはずなのに，「アート」かなんかに目覚めちゃったのでしょうか，
どんどん小難しくかつ地味になっていってしまいました。結果，メロはそこそこポップなのに，
曲全体で聴いてみると，躍動感というか，生気がまるで足りんというかなり問題ありな状況に。

しかも3rdアルバムは，どこぞの御大女性アーティストが同年に出されて，センセーショナルな話題を
振りまいたヒットアルバムのタイトルと見事にカブりまして。こりゃ弾き飛ばされますわ。

こういうバンド名ですが、メンバーにはDavid Devantはいません。なんでも20世紀初頭に活躍した手品師の名前だそうで。
この時点で相当バンドとしては胡散臭いのですが、こいつらの胡散臭さは名前だけでは終わりません。
フロントマンのVisselは、リーゼントに蛇革スーツにエロいヒゲと、マンガに出てくる胡散臭い人そのまんまです。
バンドの正式メンバーとして、絵描きさんとダーツプレイヤーがいます。ステージには手品師も登場します。
でも、キーボーディストはサブメンバーです。

音のほうはPULPを60年代っぽくしたような、ややグラムっぽいような音だったり、旅芸人風情を醸し出す曲があったりと、
確かに胡散臭いコンセプトにマッチしてることはしてるんですが、それ以外に比べると意外に真っ当。
というわけで、完全に「見世物バンド」として認知されてしまった以上、飽きられたら消え行くのは必然。
'99年にひっそりとセカンドアルバムを出すものの、もはや誰も見向きもせず、そのまま行方不明となりました。

当時のRhythm Kingは、稀代のハッタリバンドSultans Of Ping F.C.も擁していたんですが、
いったい何をしたかったんでしょうね。さっぱりわかりません。

で、現在はすっかりVisselも普通の見たくれとなり、普通に地味に続けている模様です。
04年４月には５年ぶりの音源も発売。

うっかり再流行する前にプログレ風サウンドをやらかしちまった馬鹿野郎たち。
せめてRadioheadが獣道切り開いた後に続けば、多少は受けたのかもしれませんが、あまりにもタイミング悪すぎ。
ジョン･ピールに気に入られてメジャーレーベルとの契約を入手したわけですが、
結局面白がったのはジョン・ピール本人だけだった模様です。

かなりアレンジは練れてるし、かっこいいんですが、やっぱ全体的に難しすぎというか考えすぎ。
いっぺん人気者になってからそういうことやればむしろ評価は上がるんですが、
最初からそれだと、誰も相手にしてくれません。
そこらへん、戦略は大切ですから。

元々Water BoysのツアーサポートをしていたRicky Rossが、バンドを組めば出版契約結んでやると言われ、
それがためだけに無理矢理結成されたバンド。

そんないいかげんな結成のしかたをした割にはけっこう長持ちしましたが、噂によれば解散の理由は、
'94年のベストからデビュー曲 "Dignity"をリミックスしてシングルカットするか否かで喧嘩になったこと、らしい。
いい話だなあ。
本国ではかなりの人気だったのですが、なんでそんなに受けたのかいまいちよくわからない中道ポップス。
"Dignity"は本気で名曲だけど。

また、'97年にはセカンド・アルバム"New Recording"を発表。
レーベルは全く聞いたことのないINTERNAZIONALE RECORDSで、番号が(inter001) な所を見ると、
リリースはこの１枚のみ？　内容は、アコギ弾き語りの地味なフォークロック。
また、ロスの奥方でもあるLorraine McIntoshは、妊娠という解散の間接的原因を作ったくせに、
ちゃっかりMatt Biancoの'95年のアルバム"Gran Via"にバック・ヴォーカルとして参加してます。なかなかイケてます。

考えてみれば、20年間あのキャラのまんまっつうのはすごいっすよね、ピート。
初期の数年間は典型的ゴシックパンクバンドで、だからこそこの後 Sister Of Mercy, The Missionと辿ることになる
Wayne Husseyがメンバーだった、なんてこともありえたわけで。

それがどうなったらイケイケダンスミュージック馬鹿になったのか、その理由はちいともわからないんですが、
ちょうど'83-84年頃に盛り上がってきたゲイカルチャーとしてのダンスムーブメントと関係があるのか、なんて考えたり。

Gang Of FourやThe Mekonsと同じコミュニティに属していた女３人男２人のポストパンクなバンド。
ていうか、女２名はそもそもがThe Mekonsのメンバーの彼女ということだったので、
同じコミュニティもクソもあったもんじゃないわけですが。

演奏は当時のこういうバンドの例に漏れず、カッティング重視のギターとうねり気味のベースライン、
フェミニズム志向の歌詞と、とりあえず共通仕様は網羅。演奏はさして下手ではないのですが、
ベースが２本ある意味はいまいちよくわかんない音だったりするわけで。

ただこのバンドの最大の失敗は微妙に結成やアルバム発表が遅かったことに尽きるでしょう。
既にThe SlitsやAu Pairsがリスナーの需要を満たしていた中に飛び込んでいくには、
「ベースが２本」というだけでは圧倒的な差別化を図れるほどの個性ではなく。
結局、微妙に内部分裂を起こしたりしながら徐々に崩壊。82年に解散いたしました。

エッジの立ったギターにポップなメロ。いわゆるギターポップな音で、コーラスもけっこう入ったりしてるんですが、
ぎりぎりのところで「甘く」ならないという、微妙な持ち味のあるバンドでした。

イギリスのバンドながら80年代末から90年代初頭ではアメリカのカレッジチャートの常連となり、
そこでの好調っぷりのおかげでメジャー契約にありついたのですが、ハナっからあんまし期待されておらず、
プロモーションも申し訳程度。しかも体質的にその「微妙な」あたりに個性があるバンドですから、
一聴してドカンといくわけもなく。結局アルバム２枚で放り出され、Bob Collinsが脱退するのに伴ってバンドも解散いたしました。

で、再発CDなんかもほとんど出てないバンドではあるのですが、地味に評価はされ続けており、
中古屋でもけっこうな高値でございます。手が出ねえよ。

アコギ＋歌のみというシンプル極まりない"Bizarre Love Triangle"のカバーだけはよく知られているデュオ。
Young Marble Giants→Weekendと、重要バンドを渡り歩いた後消息が掴めなくなっていたAlison Stattonと、
マンチェスターの地味バンドLudusの元メンバーで、これも長いこと音沙汰のなかったIan Devineが組んだわけですが、
音としてはWeekendの趣味をとてつもなく地味にしたような、ボッサだったりアコースティックだったり、
でも曲によっては妙な実験精神を発揮していたり。

トータルとしては非常にクオリティの高いポップスなんですけど、地味なのとレーベルが全盛期を過ぎたクレプスキュールだったせいか、
結局一番盛り上がったのは"Bizarre Love Triangle"で、それ以降は徐々にフェイドアウトしながら結局２枚で袂を別った模様。
まあ、そもそもが「馬鹿売れしてやる」みたいな野心とは100万光年くらい離れている人たちですから、まあそれもよし。

２枚目のアルバムには、"Bizarre Love Triangle"の流れか、New Orderのヒゲが１曲に参加し、
誰でもわかるあの無闇なベースを不必要にぶいぶい言わせて浮いています。おもしろいな親父。

そういうことを続けていたためか，解散後のケヴィンはソロアルバムのジャケにでっかく
"Kevin Rowland from Dexys Midnight Runners"と印刷してしまう，とてもカッコ悪い人になってしまいました。
ファーストは死ぬほどかっこいいと思うんですけどね。

バンド結成からレコードデビューまで実に６年を費やした遅咲きのバンド。着実にライブをこなし、地道にファンを増やし、
そのファンの中に当時 Boo Radleysのマーティン・カーがいたことから、彼の紹介で'96年、ついにクリエイションからデビュー！

でもこの時期、こういうギターポップはかなりの供給過多状態。
んでもって、クリエイションレーベルでも当時は Super Furrey Animalsをガシガシに一押ししており、
かなりカブる部分の大きかった彼らは、ひっそりとその影に隠れてリリースを行うばかり。これじゃ売れるものも売れません。
そうこうしているうちにレーベルが所属アーティストの整理を行い、見事に彼らも整理されてしまいました。
その後は行方不明。

まだ解散はしてないし、そのうちまたやるんでしょうけど、あまりにも沈黙が長いので入れちまいましょう。
デビューしたのはパンク以降なのに、ジャンル分けとしては完全にオールドウェイブの方に入れられてしまう
ある意味孤高のバンド。
ブルースをベースにはしているものの妙な軽みのある独特の音も、その孤高っぷりに拍車をかけております。

今見ると最高にヘボいけど当時はたまげた"Money For Nothing"、むしろ曲よりみのもんたの喋りの方が似合う
珍プレーな"Walk Of Life"、A-haの"Take On Me"みたいな"Brothers In Arms"、サンダーバードな"Calling Elvis"など、
ビデオでは変な方向に力が入ってるバンドでもあります。DVD出たら買おう。

元々初期はどうってことないニューウェイブ的な音を出していたのが，女性Voとトランペットを導入して大変化。
ネオアコのお手本のようなはっちゃけギタポになって日本の一部でも大盛り上がり。

ただ，音は大きくイメチェンを果たしても，オリジナルメンバーのルックスが相変わらず変なお化粧だったのが，
問題といえば問題でした。

そして2005年、何故か突然の再結成。再発音源を出していたVinyl Japanから異常に地味な新作を発表しています。

1982年、シングルを出すことを目的としてバンドを結成したが、即解散。当時の詳しいことは謎。
その後、VO.のドクターとアナディン・ブラザーズ〈ウエンディー＆コレット〉（Cho.）、リチャード・シール（B）、
スティーブ・マグワイア（G）、ヴォム（Dr.）でメディクスを結成し、コンサート活動に入る。
IRSと契約を結び、"Spirit In The Sky"でブレイク。年間200本以上のコンサートをこなし、
ダムドの結成10周年記念ライブのゲストなど本格的に活動。その他、主宰イベント「マジカル・ミステリー・トリップ」。
…当時はこのように相当華やかだったんですけどねえ。塔のようなドクターの頭も。

情報ください。

76年、18歳の時には、てめえでシンセサイザーを組み上げていたという生粋のテクノロジー馬鹿一代。
バグルスの前身ともなったBruce Wooley And The Camera Club、Lene Lovichのバックバンド等を経て
'81年にソロデビュー。一貫して音楽的実験を繰り返し、それを作品として発表してきたわけですが、
その生き様を見た電子楽器やソフトウェアのメーカーが、こりゃいいモルモットだということで、
様々な製品を彼に提供し、いじり倒してもらっていました。

んで、彼の出した結論。「どれも気に食わん。俺がやる」。

しばらくはポップミュージシャン&プロデューサーとしておとなしくしてた彼のテクノロジー魂にまた火がつき、
結局また機械＆コンピュータいじりの世界へ帰っていってしまいました。まあ、そのうち気が向いたらまた、
CDの１枚や２枚出してくれるかもしれません。期待せず待ちましょう。

つうことで、'96年にベンチャー企業 Beatnik社を設立。音楽関係のPCソフトウェアや、ネット上の音楽配信技術などを開発しています。
なんかクソ忙しそうで、今のところ音楽作るどころじゃないみたいっす。

70年代後半から80年代頭にかけての黎明期のシンセを使った音って、実は猛烈に作り手のセンスが出てるものでして。
本当によくできてるものは今聴いてもポップスとして普通に聞こえるけど、逆にダメなものはほんまに悲しくなるくらいかっこ悪い。

で、こいつらの音は、今聴くと常軌を逸してます。びっくりするくらいダサいです。聴いてて困っちゃうくらいです。
一部Trevor Hornプロデュースの曲もあるのですが、まだABC以前の習作という感じだし。
50〜60年代ポップス的メロをシンセをベースにしたサウンドに乗せるという発想は、Silicon Teensでのダニエル・ミラーとほぼ同時期。
パイオニア的な位置付けに置かれても決しておかしくないのですが、いかんせん信じられないくらい垢抜けていないもんですから、
今やなかったことにされています。

70年代はこれくらいのバランスでもまだイケたみたいなんですが、サウンドクリエイトとメロディの
バランスの取れた音が他に増えてくるに従い、チャートに上がってくることも少なくなりまして、
英国での人気が下降した頃に日本の「世界音楽祭」に出てビッグ・イン・ジャパンを狙って大失敗したりしていました。
'87年にErasureの"O L'Amour"をカヴァーして久しぶりにちょろヒットを記録しましたが、これも本家と比べると実にかっこ悪い。

で、途中で２回解散したんですが、食えなくなった男の方だけでDollar名義を復活。
細々と活動していましたが、'02年「Here & Now」ツアーに呼ばれたのを機にデュオ復活。
'03年にはアメリカのTV番組「Reborn In U.S.A.」のサントラに新曲を提供しています。
