TUNING & DRESS-UP GUIDE

Which part should I start tuning from? (for beginner)
name of a part
why?
1. brake pad
Acceleration of a car is very important factor in sports-driving. And many people are apt to be captivated by it. However, once a car starts moving, the speed has to be reduced sooner or later. Control of speed by brake is the most important factor in sports-driving. As you know, the only part that reduce the speed is brake pad. Nothing else. 8 pieces of pads that are much smaller than a palm of a hand are controlling speed of a car that is more than 1000kg. We think original brake pads are very poor and it's useless at battle fields. When you are driving your car at downhill in sports-driving, original brake pads start burning very soon. And effect of brake becomes extremely bad once they start burning. Extremely danger! You can't drive your car even normally.
We strongly recommend you to replace brake pads first if you start tuning of your car. You can feel much brake power by aftermarket brake pads (a certain quality is required) from the beginning. And it's still effective after burning. In addition, prices are not expensive so much.
Incidentally, never stop moving the car while brake rotor is burning. Cool down!
2. full-harness seat belt
Original seat belts (3 point mount) actually save your life, but weak point of the belts is movement to a side direction. Also, fastening of lap-belt is a problem though it's impossible to fix a human-being by single shoulder-belt originally. Anyway, it's impossible to control a car in a cabin of a car that is moving extremely due to a problem of movement of the upper part of your body. Especially, double shoulder-belt is required at the least so that the upper part of your body keeps the best position. In short, full-harness seat belt (4 point mount or more) is necessary as a tool of tuning.
3. shock absorbers
Do you know about life of original shock absorbers? 3 years? 10000 miles? No, no. The answer is only 3 minutes and 5 miles if a famous rally-driver drives a car at a rough gravel road. Internal oil seals burnout, and it can not continue using any more. This is a special story, but you can't continue using original shock absorbers more than 2 months if you are enjoying sport-driving.
If your car is swinging at the end of a curve, there seems to be 2 problem. One is skill of your driving. Another is a problem of shock absorbers. This is caused by a problem of extension side of shock absorber (outer side of curve, especially, rear).
No need to replace coil springs yet. Enjoy sports-driving without replacement of coil springs for the time being so that you can feel difference between new shock absorbers and old ones first and then you can feel difference between original coil springs and upgraded coil springs later on.
4. coil springs
Stiffness of original coil spring is soft because car manufacturers need to make their products comfortable for common people. But it makes ability of original suspension system worse because soft coil springs make the car more tilted while the car is turning. In short, softness of original coil springs is lowering ability of original suspension system.
If you replace original coil springs to stiff ones, ability of turning of your car increases because ability of original suspension system itself returns to original one. Also, you can run through a S-curve much quicker because depth of tilt decreases and returning to the original position is quick. In addition, response of steering becomes better!
Some people worry about comfort because he sometimes enjoy ordinary driving with a girlfriend. Actually, it never goes to better directions. However, uncomfort by stiff coil spring is not so much because it is mainly caused by stiffness of initial bumping of shock absorbers.
5. coilover
Coilover is one of a better way to get both shock absorbers and coil springs at a time. Also, height adjustment (+shock absorption adjustment) is available in some sorts of coilover. In addition, a certain degree of setting according to each automobile that is checked by each maker is already done. If you are a little skilled in sports-driving, it's highly recommended. However, you are still a beginner, I don't know if it's good for you because you can't learn about difference mentioned above.
6. strut tower bar
Strut tower bar is not a part for decoration, as you know. It increases stiffness of upper mounts.
If there is not, shocks from a road have to be caught by an upper mount alone. If an upper mount caught shocks from a road alone, the force doesn't go anywhere, and the body starts warping. In short, suspension can not provide original ability effectively due to a problem of the warp.
If there is, shocks from a road are transmitted to opposite side of upper mount, and the force is dispensed. As a result, ability of suspension increases, and response of steering becomes good.

When your car is turning a curve at high speed, upper mounts are receiving strong force. Even if it's a smooth tarmac road, things are the same.
Also, lower arm bar is as well as strut tower bar.
7. suspension bush/mount
In suspension parts, a lot of rubber bushes are used to soften shocks from a road in order to expand life of the body and to keep comfort as well as shock absorbers. But these rubber bushes disturb drivability. In a word, they put wheel alignment out of order when strong force is submitted. Also, some bushes disturb original ability of suspension. For example, a bush for a front suspension tension rod. (supporting toe of wheel alignment) Toe of front wheel alignment starts moving badly when hard-braking though it has to keep original position. Also, rubber bush of front upper mount disturbs response of steering.
Imagine! Which is easier? To drink very hot coffee on a trampoline. Or, a stiff board.

Tuning/dress-up guide book
If you want to learn about your own car much more, very convenient books are published by the following publisher. The publisher is selling the books internationally, so you can order the books from them directly. Contents of the book is mentioned in Japanese language, so it may be difficult for you to understand the contents. But you will be able to understand what parts are provided for your own car through the photos inserted. We can translate the contents for you if you are interested in something in the book though we request you not to inquire in bulk. Click photos to enlarge.
